Himachal Pradesh growth rate projected at 6.2 percent

The state’s economic survey said that, Himachal Pradesh’s growth rate for this fiscal year is projected at 6.2 percent which is a fall by 1.2 percent from 2011-12 growth rate.

“Growth is estimated to be lower at 6.2 percent this year over 2011-12 levels of 7.4 percent,” said the report, which was tabled in the state assembly by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. It said as per the estimates, the growth state domestic product is likely to be about Rs. 63,812 crore corresponding to Rs. 56,355, crore in 2011-12.

The primary sector during 2011-12 witnessed negative growth rate of 5.2 percent against positive growth rate of 16.3 percent of 2010-11. The agriculture production has increased from previous year. Secondary sector, comprises manufacturing, construction, electricity, gas and water supply registered growth of 8 percent for year 2011-12 which is higher than the national level but compared to last years performance in these sectors the growth in manufacturing sector remained stagnant this year. Tertiary sector comprising of transport, commerce, trade, hotel finance, real estate, community and personal services registered 12.9 percent growth.

The report said that, the per capita income is estimated at Rs. 82,611 for 2012-13. The per capita income of state at current prices in 2011-12 stood at Rs. 74,694. This shows an increase of 10.7 percent over the year 2010-11.

The fruit production registered a rise of over 79.65 percent against the previous year. “The fruit production was 4.67 lakh tonnes in 2012-13 (upto December) against the production of 3.72 lakh tonnes in 2011-12. However, during 2012-13 the apple production, the main crop, was 3.92 lakh tonnes against 2.75 lakh tonnes in 2011-12,” the survey said.

However, the food production was up by 34 percent. “During 2012-13, the food grains production was 14.49 lakh tonnes against the production of 15.54 lakh tonnes during 2011-2012. In 2012-2013, it’s estimated at 15.80 lakh tonnes.”

Himachal Pradesh’s hydropower generation potential is 23,000 MW which is about 36.38 percent of India’s total hydropower potential. However, only 8368 MW of power has been tapped in the state.

The state has attracted 1,61,46,332 tourists including 5,00,248 foreigners in 2012, the report said.

The state economy is highly dependent on hydroelectric power, horticulture and tourism.
