Toll free help line for women in Himachal Pradesh soon

In order to extend safety measures to women in the public places, Himachal Pradesh government would set up a toll free telephone number or a help line in the state. On the analogy of developed country where woman could raise alarm in wake of any crime against them and they will get immediate protection.

Addressing ‘Meet the press programme’, at hotel holiday home in Shimla, social justice and women empowerment minister Dr. Dhani Ram Shandil disclosed that women in public places or outside their houses remained venerable to any crime. State government has  mooted out a plan to register such crime on urgency after setting up toll free telephone number or help lines to nab the accused on the spot.

Emphasizing the need for providing self defense for girls in educational and vocational institutes, Dr. Shandil said that government would ensure that scout and guide training for girl students should be made compulsory, initially making provisions for 2 percent enrollment for girls so that they could face any eventuality during their life span with confidence and could come out in public places with boldness. He said, “efforts would be made to provide safe journey to women in buses and they could raise alarm in case of any eventuality”, he also said that state would recruit more women in police force to give more safety to the fair sex.

State have woman commission to readdress their grievances but victims were not getting quick justice due to various reasons. The state would find out the cause of pendency of cases and would also provide teeth to this constitutional body by ensuring that its recommendations and directions to be followed by the concerned authority on priority. Dr. Shandil said, “It is unfortunate that women commission is constitutional body like election commission but its directions and recommendations are not being followed in right spirit”. He added that currently three posts of officials in state woman commission were lying vacant for long time which are to be filled soon.

He said that state government propose to enhance the outlay for women and child development head in next budget for year 2013-14 by Rs. 67.68 crore from existing Rs. 44 crore in 2012-13.
