Heavy snowfall continues on high reaches of Himachal, many roads are snowbound

Snowfall, that started on Sunday night, is continuing on the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, whereas down streams were lashed with light to moderate rain along with thunderstorm, the Met official said.

Manali in Kullu district had 30 cm snowfall and tourist resorts like Narkanda and Kufri in Shimla district had 13 cm while Keylong in Lahual and Spiti and Kalpa in Kinnaur reported 45 cm snowfall each overnight. Udaipur in Lahual and Spiti recorded 45 cm snowfall, Sangla and Sancha in Kinnaur district had 35 mm and 20 mm respectively, Tabo in Spiti 18 mm, Purbhani  in Kinnaur district had 15 cm, Tissa and Saluni in Chamba district had 4 mm and 2 mm respectively.

Since last night, rain and storm hit down streams like Shimla, Solan, Kangra, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Sirmaur. Dharamshala reported 38 mm rainfall and this capital town 11.8 mm. Kumarsen in Shimla district 107 mm, Seobagh in Kullu district 45 mm, Saluni in Chamba district 44 mm, Jogindernagar in Mandi district, Palampur in Kangra district and Bhuntar in Kullu district 26 mm each, Gaggal airport and Dehra Gopipur in Kangra district had 25 mm and 20 mm rainfall respectively, Nurpur, Nagrota Suriyan in Kangra district, Baijnath and Gohar in Mandi district 19 mm each, Nadaun in Hamirpur district 18 mm, Ghamroor in Bilaspur district 17 mm, Amb in Una district, Rampur in Shimla district and Guler in Kangra district 15 mm each and Sundernagar in Mandi district14 mm.

Kalpa in Kinnaur was coldest in the state with minus 3 degrees followed by Keylong minus 2.7 degrees, Shimla 3.6 degrees and Manali minus 1.6 degrees. Day temperature of Himachal declined sharply as maximum temperature of Shimla was 7.6 degrees, Kalpa 0 degrees, Bhunter 5.7 degrees, Sundernagar 11 degrees, Solan 13 degrees, Nahan 14 degrees and Una 16 degrees.

After continue snowfall in the state many important roads became snowbound again as traffic disrupted on NH 21 and NH 22. Vehicular traffic on Manali-Chandigarh road hampered after one feet fresh snowfall. Hindustan-Tibet road becomes snowbound at Kufri, Narkanda, Tapri and Reckong-Peo, Shimla-Theog-Jubbal, Kotkhai and Rohru, the state highway also got disrupted after heavy snowfall. HRTC deploying buses to Rampur via Mashobra and Basantpur. All local roads linking Keylong with Udaipur and rest of district also became unfit for the deploying traffic as heavy snowfall was continue.

District administration of Kinnaur, Kullu, Chamba and Lahual and Spiti extended winter vacations for school going children from two days to one week as the state run schools were schedule to open on Feb 6, 2013.

The Met office has issued warning of snow storm and heavy snowfall in Shimla, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kullu, Lahual and Spiti and Kangra districts and heavy rainfall in Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una and Mandi district in next 24 hours. Rain is also likely to occur in many parts in the middle hills and plain areas.
