Warning of heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh

High reaches of Himachal Pradesh reported fresh snowfall as it was mainly overcast. Most of the mountain ranges in the state were covered with thick clouds increasing the cold wave in the state.

Report arriving from Lahual and Spiti, Kinnaur, Kullu and Chamba said that clouds were hovering over the major mountain ranges, which were getting snowfall since yesterday afternoon.

The Met office warned of heavy snowfall in few parts of the state in coming days as western disturbances is heading towards the state. Presently feeble western disturbances were keeping the entire state under cover of thick clouds and also reduced the visibility in the day.

Most of the roads in snowbound areas like Kinnuar, Shimla, Lahual and Spiti and Chamba were already wrapped under thick layer of snow, keeping life snowbound without power supply and cut off from rest of the world, as it could not resume completely after heavy snowfall which occurred on January 17 and 18, 2013. Fresh warning of heavy snowfall by the Met office had increased worries of people who were already captive in their houses in the snowbound areas, making a challenge for district administrations to restore life, moreover danger of heavy snowfall is looming largely due to fresh inclement weather in the state.

The mercury was keeping exceptionally low in the state in the snowbound areas as Keylong was coldest in the  state with minus 10 degrees Celsius followed by Kalpa in Kinnuar at minus five degrees and Manali at minus 1.6 degrees. The middle hills were little warmer yesterday,  as minimum temperature of Bhuntar in Kullu district was at 2 degrees, Sunderngar at 3 degrees, Shimla and Solan town at 4 degrees each, Una and Saluni in Chamba district at 5 degrees each, Palampur at 6 degrees, Nahan and Dharamshala at 7 degrees. Maximum temperature of Kalpa was at 2 degrees, Shimla at 14 degrees, Bhuntar at 17 degrees, Nahan at 18 degrees, Solan and Sundernagar at 19 degrees each, Dharamshala at 20 degrees and Una at 23 degrees.

The met office forecast rain or snow on the high reaches and mainly dry weather in the rest of the state during next 24 hours. Issuing advance warning to people, it said that heavy snowfall is likely to occur at few places in district of Chamba, Lahual & Spiti, Kangra, Kullu, Kinnaur and Shimla from mid night of 4th February to morning of 6th February 2013. Heavy rainfall or thundershowers may occur in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, lower parts of Solan, Mandi, Sirmaur and Kangra.
