A two day national symposium on Nano-biotechnology was held on June 1-2, 2012 at Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi. The scientists concerned about the generation of nano-particles by cement factories operating in Himachal Pradesh which have become a serious health hazard have come up with guidelines which are to be recommended to the State and Central government.

The conference mainly led stress on the synthesis of noble, bio-compatible nano-materials and to determine their efficiency and potential for promotion of human health.

The symposium was attended by about 120 delegates from different parts of the country. During the panel discussion it was decided that besides developing eco-friendly techniques for synthesis of nano-materials, new experiential models need  to be developed to determine efficacy and safety of engineered and naturally occurring nano materials for targeted drug delivery and diagnosis and treatment of diseases  related to cardiovascular, metabolic as well as bone disorders.

In order to harvest full potential of nano-biotechnology during the 21st century and to develop preventive and remedial measures against the ill effects of nano-materials, a Nano-biotechnology Society has been formed consisting of experts from different fields like engineering, medical, basic sciences and life sciences under the patronage of Prof. Timothy A. Gonsalves, Director IIT Mandi.

The recommendations of the society will be shortly made available to the regulatory authorities in Himachal Pradesh assured Dr. R. C. Sawhney, Registrar, IIT Mandi and Co-convener of the Symposium.
