Traffic partially disrupted on Manali-Leh highway

Manali (July 6): Frequent landslides near Raninalah glacier have partly disrupting traffic on the strategic Manali-Leh road, resulting in long queues of vehicles even as the Boarder Road Organization (BRO) personall are clearing the debris on a regular basis.

Talking to HimVani, former legislator from Lahaul Spiti Raghubir Thakur
said that the district was still partly cut off as locals have to wait for two or three days to cross the road between Keylong and Manali. He accused the BRO of negligence, claiming that peas and apple crop from the valley is rotting due to poor transportation.

Meanwhile, Kullu deputy commissioner BM Nanta has asked tourists and locals  not to venture on the road every Tuesday due to maintenance work being carried out. At a point called Raninalah glacier, a massive hill is sliding down due to fast melting of glaciers in the upstream areas, which needs daily repair.

He said vehicle with outside registration numbers who want to pass Rohtang for Leh are being allowed to go beyond Kothi, while tourists who specially want to go to see Rohtang only are being allowed to travel by local taxis. He said soon Himachal tourism department would start Maxi Cabs for Rohtang.
