One dies of diarrhea, 18 others hospitalized in Shimla

Shimla: One person died while 18 others were hospitalized due to diarrhea outbreak in Sanjauli, on the outskirts of Shimla, health official confirmed here today.

According to deputy medical superintendent Ramesh Chand, Manoj Kumar of Sanjuli succumbed to diarrhea at IGMC Hospital on Wednesday while 18 others were hospitalized. He said that in the last two days, 40 cases have been reported from Sanjauli area, out of which 22 were treated as outpatients and 18 were admitted.

A spokesperson of the health department said here today that in view of increasing number of diarrhea cases in Sanjauli area, the department has undertaken various preventive measures. He said that three health teams were constituted which visited 265 houses, distributed 4,000 tablets of chlorine and 150 ORS packets in the affected area.

Two cases of diarrhea were also identified by these teams and they were advised to visit the hospital at the earliest, he added.
He said that the civil dispensary in Sanjauli was functioning 24 hours for any emergency services and added that pamphlets were being distributed in the affected area for educating people to protect themselves from water-borne diseases.
