Mandi: With the fresh recovery of 60 deodar sleepers by a team of forest department concealed in a deep cave in the wildlife sanctuary of Shikari Devi in Karsog valley on Wednesday, forest officials are once again on their toes to net the culprits.

The timber has been seized and case registered. Divisional forest officer BS Rana confirming the seizure of timber added that the persons involved in illicit felling would be dealt with an iron hand. The forest officials are now convinced that the illicit felling in the closed sanctuary has assumed alarming proportions. More teams have been deputed to search and scan the entire sanctuary to unearth more timber from obscure hideouts.

It may be recalled that there is a blanket ban on green felling in Himachal Pradesh. The widespread devastation of deodar forests in the Shikar Devi sanctuary in Karsog valley was exposed by a team of electronic media earlier this month after which officials of the forest department woke up and swung into action and placed some forest guards and other officials under suspension.

  1. at my place.. one can see the signs of illegal wood trade from a distance of ten kilometers 😉 these guys roll down the wood logs from a small peak and collect them at the base.. the signs are quite prominent.. forest guards are busy with local alcohol brands and people don’t seem to give a damn until they run out of water in summers and have no rains for months.. 😉
