Shimla: Bringing in a major shift in management of paragliding sport in Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today announced that the ‘World Paragliding Competition’, which was earlier being organized by the department of tourism and civil aviation, would now be organized by the department of youth services and sports henceforth in collaboration with Atal Behari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali.
He said the decision has been taken keeping in view their expertise in organizing various sports events, including aviation sports events. It may be pertinent to mention here that lately there have also been speculations about the sport falling victim to politics as SAIL, which comes under the Union steel ministry headed by Virbhadra Singh, had been sponsoring the paragliding event.
Dhumal expressed surprise over the statement of Virbhadra Singh in which he has stated that the state government did not want him to be the chief guest at the paragliding event proposed to be held at Bir-Billing later this year. He said that the Union minister should have got the facts verified before making such a statement. He criticized the then Congress government in the state for politicising sports by enacting the Sports Act.
