Shimla: Local people living in the vicinity of 1,000 MW Wangtu Hydro Electric Project have sent a complaint to minister of environment and forest Jairam Ramesh raising objection regarding project proposal for diversion of additional forest land measuring 6.7190 ha (including under ground area 3.0688ha.) for implementation of Karcham Wangtu HEP in Kinnaur district.

Retired IAS officer RS Negi, who is resident of the affected area and leading the local people against violation of environment and mining laws by the project operators, told HimVani that a letter has been sent to Union forest and environment minister Jairam Ramesh not to allow diversion of land to the project. He said that the project has been seeking permission from the Union ministry through state forest department agency, which is perusing proposal for diversion of additional forest land for construction of a road going to the surge shaft, construction of flushing tunnel (including outlet structure) and construction of tunnel from new Baspa bridge to Baspa- 2 power house under Section 2 of Forest Conservation Act 1980.
