Shimla: Agricultural and Processed Food Product Export Development Authority (APEDA) has inked an MoU with Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation (HPMC) for providing support for horticulture export promotion in the state.

According to APEDA chairman AK Tripathi, who was in town to attend a function here, said that presently about Rs 45,395 crore worth agriculture export was being contributed by APEDA. He stressed the need that despite huge potential, agriculture exports could never pick up until infrastructure, cold chain and quality labs were provided. For this, private players and entrepreneurs needed to play an important role, he said, adding that the state government had to allure private players and entrepreneurs for investment by providing investment-friendly policies.

Lack of backward integration, pre-harvest and post harvest management techniques, cold chain, market information and quality control were major hindrance for export of state produce. After getting expertise from APEDA the state could emerged as a major player in export of agriculture and horticulture produces. After signing this MOU, debt-trapped HPMC can hope to break free from losses.
