Khoj, a voluntary organisation working in Tashi Jong, Himachal Pradesh has been able to raise money for plantation of 100 trees in the area. Money has been promised by volunteers for plantation of another 50 trees.

Speaking to HimVani, Khoj coordinator, Bhakti, said, “We are in the stage of getting the land cleared and are facing a tough time in terms of getting people to do it. So we volunteered and cleared a portion one Sunday morning; and now due to the wheat harvest, again there is going to be a lapse for a while.”

HimVani has been actively supporting Khoj’s endevaour, which has appealed to the general public and readers of HimVani to come forward and “Sponsor a tree“. All it requires Rs 300 for a single tree.

Khoj would also be conducting a poster making competition in private schools very soon. “Last week we went to some schools in the villages of Baijnath and Paprola to give a brief on the issues of global warming – causes, effects, prevention methods… our role as responsible human beings,” she said.

The prizes of the competition are: 1st prize – a week long trip to Rishikesh where one can indulge in rafting, kayaking, mountaineering etc. 2nd prize: Two day trip to Dharamshala or Barot. 3rd prize: A two-year subscription for a magazine called Sanctuary.

Bhakti is being suported by her friends in Mumbai and Canada. So what kind of help is she looking for? “I need all kinds of help actually. I need help… more help, like someone to write more about what’s happening, as we are trying to get a poster going which we could put up in Mcleodganj,” she said.
