A ‘Run’ for all-season tourism

The Great Himalayan Run, in its second year – hoping to make tourism an all-season affair, will be held on Novemer 12, in Shimla.

The run, being organised by the Youth Services and Sports Department in association with the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department will commence at 11:00 am from the Ridge Maidan.

About 3,000 athletes are expected to particpate in the four groups – Open Men (12 km), Open Women (8 km), Boys and Girls from 17 to 19 years of age (6 km), Boys and Girls from 13 to 16 years of age (3 km).

The Run would start from Ridge and lead to Chaura Maidan, Advance Study and back to Scandal Point, Reporting Room, Indira Gandhi State Sports Complex Shimla Club, Oakover, Portmore, Raj Bhawan, Indus Hospital, Hostel Medical College, IGMC (Indira Gandhi Medical College), Lakkar Bazar, and finally end at the Ridge itself.

Finishers in all categories upto the 15th place will be awarded prizes, certificates and souvenirs. The winner in the Men’s group will get a cash award of Rs. 15,000. The first and second runners-up will get a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and Rs 7,000 respectively. There are cash prizes for the fourth to tenth position as well.

In the Women’s category the winner gets a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and the first and second runners-up will get a cash prize of Rs 8,000 and 6,000 respectively.

Similarly, the other groups too carry cash prizes. The objective of the Run is to harness the potential of eco-tourism by conducting national and international run in the forest trials; to promote event based tourism in the State; to promote new concepts in tourism and create synergy between sports and tourism activities; To bring mass awareness of Sports, Health and Tourism; and to diversify tourism to attract visitors in other seasons as well.
